旧聞ですが、イギリスの日曜版タブロイド紙News of the Worldが150年以上の歴史を突然閉じたのが先月。長年にわたる電話盗聴によるネタ収集が明らかにされてでした。

自業自得、ではありますが、News of the Worldというと思い出すのが、1984やAnimal Farmで有名なGeorge OrwellのエッセーDecline of the English Murder。リンクから全文が読めますので、興味のある方には読んでいただくとして、このエッセイはこう始まります。

It is Sunday afternoon, preferably before the war. The wife is already asleep in the armchair, and the children have been sent out for a nice long walk. You put your feet up on the sofa, settle your spectacles on your nose, and open the News of the World. Roast beef and Yorkshire, or roast pork and apple sauce, followed up by suet pudding and driven home, as it were, by a cup of mahogany-brown tea, have put you in just the right mood.

どうです？キリスト教徒にとって日曜日の午後は一番ゆったりできるとき。朝は教会での礼拝、帰りにローストビーフとヨークシャープディンのご馳走を食べ、家に帰る。マホガニー色の紅茶を用意して読むのが、日曜版タブロイド紙だったんですね。

このエッセーを初めて読んだのが、大学2年の時。イギリス人のSnowden先生指導の下、悪戦苦闘したのでした。考えてみれば、それから5年後にイギリス留学を選んだのはこの辺に伏線があったわけで、その時はどんな新聞なのか想像するしかなかったのですが、こんな形での最後は残念です。
